- Description
- The author identifies as Aboriginal-Irish, my Aboriginal ancestors are the Gai-mariagal and the Wiradjuri, my Irish ancestors are said to have wintered in Bandon and summered at Dungarvan. In 2011 with the support of my employer, the University of Newcastle, together with the Australian Endeavour Foundation and the generosity of my host, Professor Thomas Cooney and the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), I was able to undertake a qualitative study of Travellers in the Republic of Ireland. This is a brief overview and summary of some issues raised in this study involving 150 interviews. The results are not that surprising for those with any contact or knowledge of the Irish Traveller, who in general are a resourceful ethnic minority who suffer many, if not the worst of the social inhibitors by the dominating - assimilating society.
